Charging costs

EV charging idle fees in Singapore

An idle fee is what a network charges for leaving the car connected after it has finished charging. Almost every operator starts that clock when the session ends, not when your parking does — so a full battery at 7pm and a return to the car at 8pm is an hour of idle time, whatever the car park says. The exception is Tesla: at a busy Supercharger its congestion fee can start while the car is still charging, once the battery reaches 80%.

What each network charges

9 operators, between them 2,590 of Singapore's 2,811 charging locations, publish an idle-fee policy — though several only say a fee may apply, without a rate. A dash means the operator does not publish that detail.

Networks that publish nothing

These operators run public chargers but do not put an idle-fee policy anywhere you can read it before plugging in. That is the answer, not an omission on our part — check the operator's own app, and assume a fee may apply.

  • Keppel Volt 77 locations

Keppel Volt asks drivers to move within a 20-minute grace period after charging ends, but publishes no idle fee.

How to not pay one

  • Treat the grace period as the real deadline. On most networks it starts at the end of the session and runs 15 to 30 minutes; at a busy Tesla Supercharger it is 5 minutes.
  • Turn on the operator app's push notification for session end — on several networks that alert is the only warning you get that the clock has started.
  • Charging to 100% on a DC charger is slow at the top and leaves you idling while it crawls. The cost-per-kWh comparison and each charger's busy hours are the better way to plan a stop.
